SERVER MIGRATION

WHAT IS SERVER MIGRATION?

Server migration is a process in which a server (physical or virtual), with its operating system and data is moved between two environments – from/to datacenters or IaaS clouds. The process starts with planning – risk assessment, team formation, process and system documentation.

The migration team consists of a project manager that should have expertise in similar projects, system engineers who have knowledge about the existing and new environments and development engineers who have knowledge about the migrated application as well as the new environment in order to quickly solve issues. Virtual People can provide an experienced project manager who will gather and coordinate the team and also develop procedures required for the migration. After the migration has been completed, customer can choose Virtual People to start managing the new environment (Virtual IT Operations service).

Before starting the actual migration process, a proof of concept (PoC) has to be undertaken on a smaller scale in order to test the migration process and identify all major risks. Different cloud service providers have different VM import requirements.
